Step 2:  Trace Halloween Designs on to Shrinky Dink Paper

Initially, your shrinky dink will curl up, but keep heating, moving the heat gun around, and it will flatten out as more of the shrink plastic shrinks fully. Shrink plastic curls and contorts as you heat it, but flattens itself out again. Choose frosted shrink plastic sheets for a ready-to-use product with a textured surface that you can add colour to. Usually, the plastic sheet curls up at first but will flatten out as you continue heating and the shrinking becomes more uniform across the shape. One challenge of using shrink plastic is that the shrink plastic sheets are often crystal clear.

How do you know what to size the original printed image in order to get the size you want for finished book cover? It’s not super strong, and is pretty much gone within minutes after you’re done baking. I also found some actual Shrinky Dinks at Dollar Tree back in the toy department by the crafts for kids. Cut out the rainbows, but leave about shrinky dink paper ¼" around the outer edge, and cut flat across the bottom. Cut out the circles, staying close to the outer edge. They will curl up quite a bit, but don’t worry; they will eventually lay completely flat. Applying Heat

Once it has stopped moving and lies flat, let it bake for another 30 seconds. On a rare occasion, we have had our edges touch and stick together. Place your cut-out pieces colored side up on the sheet, spaced out to avoid sticking. Preheat your oven or toaster oven to 325°F (163°C), or follow the temperature on your specific plastic’s instructions. Rounded corners are preferable since sharp points can curl up too much or break after shrinking. Just remember to color boldly, as the colors will intensify but darken during baking.

Crystal clear are the choice if you are stamping or have permanent markers to use, and you can always add your own texture to clear sheets with glass paper. The plastic will suddenly start to contort and move in different directions. Hold it down gently using a wooden skewer, or something similar, as once you apply the heat it will start to twist and turn. Being neat is not important, as you will cut out the image and shrinking concentrates the colour. It’s best to use fairly light shades of pencils, as any colour you use will darken when you shrink the image.
